26th - 28th June 2013, East Africa

In June 2013, the annual Invictus Prize Awards Gala and Social Entrepreneurship Convention will recognise, bring together, deliberate with, empower and honour 110 of the most outstanding young social entrepreneurs Africa has to offer, and afterwards continue to support and empower millions more - established and aspiring young entrepreneurs - across the continent and beyond through 5 Regional Summits, 5 National Summits, the Mentorship Programme and the African YSE Network. The 3 days of the convention will include leadership and social enterprise forums, exhibitions, screening of the Invictus Documentary, finally culminating with the Awards Gala. Eight Invictus Prizes will be awarded: 7 Thematic prizes - Health Equity, Environment & Climate Change, Technology 4 Development, Leading Women, Building Peace, Celebrating Sports & Culture, Education 4 All - and the grand Invictus Prize for Africa.

The Invictus Prize was created to give young people a unique platform, the skills, tools and resources to use social entrepreneurship and ICTs4D. to effectively address unemployment, poverty, health concerns, food insecurity and environmental degradation while also promoting region integration. Social entrepreneurs recognize a social problem and use entrepreneurial principles to organize, create and manage a venture to achieve social change (a social venture). While a business entrepreneur typically measures performance in profit and return, a social entrepreneur focuses on creating social capital. Thus, the main aim of social entrepreneurship is to further social and environmental goals - but this need not preclude making a profit.

The 3 Day Agenda in Brief:

  • 110 of the best young social entrepreneurs get an opportunity to interact with local, regional and international business chiefs, world leaders, key decision makers, mentors, icons, experts, financiers and access the world of formidable business/social entrepreneurship resources, skills and tools; and platforms for change/ policy engagement; and forums for discussion, support, networking & sharing of best practices, and learning/capacity building/ technical  assistance
  • Day 1: launch of the African Young Social Entrepreneurs Network, Leadership and Social enterprise forums, Exhibitions
  • Day 2: Leadership and Social enterprise forums, Exhibitions
  • Day 3: Screening of the Invictus Documentary [based on the inspiring stories of the nominees] and the Awards Ceremony
